On the energy of terminated stacking faults

چکیده

The equilibrium of dissociated dislocations is discussed in terms of intrinsic material properties such as the ideal stacking fault energy (ideal SFE) and the stacking fault (SF) strain. The ideal SFE is de® ned as the energy per unit area of an in® nitely extendedSF in an ideal in® nite crystal. The e€ ective SFE is de® ned as the energy per unit area of a terminated SF. The terminated SF is associated with a strain ® eld. The strain ® eld is modelled in terms of conventional and Somigliana dislocations. It is found that the e€ ective SFE signi® cantly overestimates the ideal SFE if the ideal SFE is low and the SF strain is large. A numerical example is given for austenitic stainless steel.

Grain-boundary dissociation by the emission of stacking faults.

A range of ^110& symmetric tilt grain boundaries ~GB’s! are investigated in several fcc metals with simulations and high-resolution electron microscopy. Boundaries with tilt angles between 50.5° and 109.5° dissociate into two boundaries 0.6 to 1.1 nm apart. The dissociation takes place by the emission of stacking faults from one boundary that are terminated by Shockley partials at a second boun...

Energetics and electronic structure of stacking faults in AlN, GaN, and InN

Basal-plane stacking faults in wurtzite AlN, GaN, and InN are studied using density-functionalpseudopotential calculations. The formation energies follow the trend exhibited for the zinc-blende/wurtzite energy differences in the bulk materials, namely, lowest energy for GaN and highest for AlN. Type-I stacking faults have the lowest energy, followed by type-II stacking faults, and finally extri...

A Thermodynamic Model for the Stacking- Fault Energy

ÐA general thermodynamic model for calculating the energy of stacking faults is presented and applied to f.c.c. Fe±Cr±Ni alloys. A distinction is made between ideal stacking faults and real stacking faults which are associated with an ideal stacking-fault energy (SFE) and an e€ective SFE, respectively. The ideal SFE is characterized by a chemical energy volume term and an interphase surface ene...

Impact of octahedral rotations on Ruddlesden–Popper phases of antiferrodistortive perovskites

This work presents the most detailed and extensive theoretical study to date of the structural configurations of Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) phases in antiferrodistortive (AFD) perovskites and formulates a program of study which can be pursued for RP phases of any AFD perovskite system. We systematically investigate the effects of oxygen octahedral rotations on the energies of RP phases in AFD perov...

MP2 study on the variation of stacking interactions in aniline and some para substituted aniline systems

The use of appropriate level of theories for studying weak van der Waal interactions such as 8-8stacking interactions of aromatic molecules has been an important aspect, since the high levelmethods have limitations for application to large molecules. The differences in the stacking energiesof various aromatic molecular structures are found significant. It is also very important for identifyingt...
